BUSINESS

We aim to prepare Business students for the future challenges that their careers will present.

Taking the right decisions is the key factor which determines business success. The course concentrates on how managers can take effective decisions and the information they need to make the right choices. Reading a subject specification is, generally, rather tedious. What follows is not the Business syllabus but a series of business situations which our students are encouraged to analyse and discuss during the course. These give an insight into the true core of the subject – decision-making within organisations:

ETHOS AND AIMS

Never before has the world of business affected the lives of the average person more, providing opportunities to innovate, relate and be a real driving force in a dynamic and global society.

Business tackles a range of diverse, exciting and thought-provoking areas including, to name but a few: 

  • How can entrepreneurs walk away with thousands of pounds of investment, even with a product that doesn’t work?
  • Does the Body Shop care more about animal welfare than its loyalty to customers and shareholders?
  • What makes a business with a fantastic product file for bankruptcy within a few months?
  • Will companies like Coca Cola be a part of our future or should we leave them behind?

Business is more than being able to be good at business. It forces students to reflect on everything around them and instils a world of curiosity and belief which will help them in their present and future lives.

CURRICULUM

At Hurtwood we follow the Edexcel Specification.

In the A1 year students focus on two key areas:

Theme 1: Marketing & People – The Market; Market Research; Demand & Supply; The Marketing Mix; Recruitment, Selection & Training; Motivation; Role & Characteristics of an Entrepreneur; Forms of Business.

Theme 2: Managing Business Activities – Internal & External Finance; Sales, Revenue & Costs; Break Even, Profit; Business Failure; Economic Influences; Legislation.

At A2 level, the scale and complexity of businesses takes a more global picture looking at powerful multinationals and governments that shape our world today and will certainly play a key role in the future lives of our students. Once again students study two key themes: 

Theme 3: Business Decisions & Strategy - Business Objectives & Strategy; Business growth; Decision-making techniques; Business Decisions; Competitiveness; Managing Change. 

Theme 4: Global Business – Globalisation; Global Markets & Business Expansion; Global Marketing; Global Industries & Companies. 

Wherever possible, students are given the opportunity to critically analyse the choices made by businesses, looking at successes and failures in the business world. Students are also given active opportunities to be creative, innovating new products and business ideas. This supports their performance in the subject and there is always the belief that someone might just stumble upon the next million pound idea.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

The department actively embraces links with local and national businesses.

With guest speakers and visits ranging from Delta Force Paintball, The Hogsback Brewery, Brompton Bikes, BMW Mini, Harry Potter World and Verb Brands.
